SweetGen is looking to hire a Business Development Lead to drive sales and fundraising at an innovative clean tech company, with the opportunity to progress into a board-level role within 1 year.

Company Profile

SweetGen Limited is an award-winning tech start-up, spun out from Imperial College, commercialising a breakthrough catalyst which offers a low energy, more sustainable alternative in a wide range of sectors.

We have won grant funding from the BEIS Energy Entrepreneurs’ Fund and Innovate UK and won the Royal Society of Chemistry Emerging Technologies Competition (Food and Water), taken part in the Climate KIC, Imperial College Venture Catalyst Challenge and the Repsol Fondo de Entreprenures accelerators.

SweetGen is focused on applications in the water treatment, battery electrode, and alkaline fuel cell sectors for the initial deployment of its technology. We have secured early stage trials with a water utility and a major chemicals company and are looking to find further opportunities to demonstrate our platform catalyst.

Building on this strong foundation, SweetGen is looking to raise seed funding within the next year and is in the process of developing its business plan and engaging with its target applications and customers. As business development lead, you will work closely with the CEO and the rest of the scientific and technical team to engage with the market, grow the commercial opportunity for SweetGen, develop the business plan and raise seed funding.

The Role

Your main task will be attracting new customers and supporting fundraising as well as maintaining the existing customer base, researching industry trends, and using those insights to identify business opportunities in new and existing markets.  You will build relationships with current and future customers and potential investors.  This role will have a broad remit and will include:

  • Developing SweetGen’s sales pipeline and revenues through market outreach
    • Analyse and assess potential target applications and customer groups
    • Establish and validate market need and interest, engaging with target customers and partners to develop new leads
    • Formulate customer value proposition
    • Lead proposals and pitches, building relationships with potential clients and route-to-market partners, supported by the CEO and technical team
    • Manage and develop relationships with existing clients and pilot projects
  • Formulate market-related sections of the business plan, leading on commercial aspects
    • Priority applications and opportunities for SweetGen to enter new markets
    • Competitor analysis
    • Route to market options
    • Pricing and margins
    • Revenue projections
  • Support formulation of rest of business plan
    • Product development plan
    • Team plan
    • Financial projections
  • Lead SweetGen’s Seed Round fundraising, with support from CEO
    • Evolving SweetGen’s pitch deck
    • Networking with investors
    • Pitching to potential investors
  • Support for internal company operations
    • Provide business development mentoring to other team members
    • Track revenue and expenses performance against budget

The location for this role will be flexible to suit the individual, with remote working possible.  An in-person schedule will be agreed, with likely in-person meetings fortnightly at SweetGen’s labs in Cambridge. Office space is also available at SweetGen’s offices at the Imperial College White City Incubator.


Relationships are key to this role and you will enjoy proactively identifying new business opportunities whilst leading conversations with our customers to develop the most suitable product. As Business Development Lead at SweeGten you will develop a network of new and existing customers and become the ‘face’ of SweetGen.

Required skills / experience

  • Business development or sales experience (at least 3 years), including relationship and credibility building with customers and partners, including technical, operational, and R&D teams
  • At least 5 years industry experience
  • Business analysis skills gained in a business development or analyst role and / or through business training
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Persistent self-starter

Desirable skills / experience

  • Pitching to investors and early stage fundraising.
  • Scientific or engineering background, graduate level with knowledge of chemistry or material sciences helpful
  • Experience and contacts in the water treatment, chemicals, alkaline fuel cell, or battery industries
  • Market and business plan development in technology start-ups
  • Scaling a technology company including business plan development
  • Working with technical teams to understand and guide development

The package

  • Salary range £50-60,000 per year
  • Attractive stock option package upon achievement of defined targets.
