We’re a London-based tech startup working to make therapy a universal employee benefit. We’re funded by Passion Capital, Ada Ventures and Seedcamp: the best in the game.
We make a Slack app that companies purchase to allow their employees to access wellbeing tools and content (if they’re feeling okay), ask questions to therapists over message (if they’re feeling a bit ‘meh’), and book therapy or coaching sessions in just three clicks (if they need more support).
It’s everything that the NHS, private health insurance and employee assistance programmes aren’t: easy to access, designed to be used by everyone, and 100% un-intimidating. We’re proud to count among our list of clients progressive employers like Typeform, Depop and Bulb.
The role and the work
In short, the role is to ensure that Spill has best-in-class, scalable business operations.
You will have holistic ownership of Spill’s business operations. This includes everything from accountancy & invoicing to recruitment & hiring for Spill HQ. You will be building internal systems, working with third parties and championing the processes required to help Spill grow. You will work with other teams at Spill, with external contractors, on your own, and with our Counsellor Operations Manager to get the work done.
Some examples of work projects would be (i) building and managing a cashflow reporting system, (ii) coordinating with each head of department to recruit critical hires for Spill and (iii) automating client invoicing to reduce people time spent on this task every month.
The ideal candidate
We care about experience, traits, and attitude. We also care about diversity — we want to receive applications from as wide a range of people as possible.
- You have 2+ years of Operations experience. This could be at an ops role in another start-up or at a top consulting firm. You are excited about the chance to automate, improve and own processes like cashflow, invoicing, recruitment and many others.
- You have led a workstream. At Spill you will be the go-to person for business operations so you need to have led your own workstream in the past. You will have decision rights for how we shape the function going forward. You will decide which trade-offs to make when juggling many different priorities. You will advocate for the function within the rest of Spill. If these statements excite you, that’s a good sign.
- You are proficient in Excel and eager to learn more. Proficiency in Google Sheets / Excel is a must. But you will also be working with a range of other software across the business. A desire to learn new softwares and potentially even code is important.
- Preferred: You have experience in a high-growth startup environment. We are still a small startup with an all-hands-on-deck attitude. There are certain tasks where everyone at the company is expected to pitch in. Spill also ticks all the other cliches: fast-paced, a bit chaotic, very absorbing. If you enjoy these things, you will love working with the team.
Traits and attitude
You take decisions based on data. You track Ops KPIs religiously and use them to spot issues and improve performance. If you don’t have the data yet, you can implement frameworks to help you decide the best path forward.
You are comfortable with occasional chaos and ambiguity. You take a proactive approach to these things. When there’s a lack of process you create it. When someone forgets to tell you something, you chase them until they do.
You love to learn. You will quickly become the person at Spill who knows the most about business operations. For the function to continue improving, you need to be continually learning. Having an active approach to this is crucial.
The pay and the benefits
The salary for this full-time role is
£41 + stock options depending on your experience. We obviously have all the statutory benefits: a minimum of 25 days of holiday (excluding bank holidays), pension, sick leave. It should go without saying that you can take the day off or chat with your Spill therapist if you’re feeling under the weather. Beyond that, we make no promises.
The joke goes that when startups say they have a flat structure they mean that the CEO makes every decision. That when they say you’ll have lots of autonomy they mean you’ll have to figure it all out by yourself. That faced-paced environment means everyone’s stressed and overworked. That unlimited holiday means no holiday. And so on. This is only funny because it’s often true.
That said, you’ll probably find at Spill some of the things you find in all startups: a friendly atmosphere, inspiring colleagues, lots of opportunities for feedback.
On top of that, we often have rogue ideas. Every few months (when restrictions allow), we go somewhere outside of London for a few days and make our plans for the quarter. We have no idea how Spill culture will change as we grow. But we’re open to good pitches. We all took three days off in March 2021 for a Spill Bank Holiday. We rarely say no to a good idea.
