About Our Company

Chip[s] Board® is a bioplastic innovation company, focusing on bringing sustainable circular economy materials to mass markets. We have now become established as a pioneering brand in the bioplastic industry. Our materials are all developed using industrial food waste as replacements for harmful plastics used in everyday products. We have a particular focus on durable materials for the fashion and interior design markets.

Chip[s] Board® is a fast-moving company, and the successful candidate will join our core team as we grow. Joining our team is an exciting opportunity, and every member needs key specialist skills to ensure we are growing smartly.

We’re looking for someone with a background in Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering to join our team on a full-time or part-time basis. This is an opportunity to assist in process development and optimisation for our bioplastic production process. The role will be predominantly focussed on modelling process scale-up (lab scale to small production plant) in order to take our materials to commercial success.

We are looking for an experienced professional with previous experience in biochemical processing. The successful candidate will play a vital role in the development of new sustainable materials. A background in chemical engineering/biochemical engineering/process engineering is essential and previous experience in solids handling, separation methodologies, heat transfer and hygienic process operations in food/pharmaceutical industry are desirable.

  • Primary focus on designing and improving bioplastic production process including fermentation, downstream processing and polymerisation

  • Process optimisation and sensitivity analysis for production procedures

  • Improve production efficiency and assess opportunities for modification and innovation

  • Coordinate with team and external organisations in planning studies to examine process efficiencies

  • Communicate the progress and data analysis in the form of technical reports

  • Creating P&IDs, plant layout and plant design

  • Participation in HAZOP, HAZID and SIL reviews while acting as a point of contact for clients for process-related matters

  • Educated to HNC or Degree level in a Scientific/Engineering discipline with > 2 year of industrial experience

  • A qualification in Chemical Engineering or relevant discipline eligible for IChemE membership

  • An academic foundation in physics, in particular, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics

  • Previous simulation and system modelling experience in MATLAB

  • Experience with process modelling software, i.e. SuperPro, GAMS, Aspen or similar

  • Experienced in fermentation at laboratory or, preferably, industrial-scale (operating fermenters, process monitoring, problem-solving)

  • Understanding of fermentation operations (feeding, mixing, gas treatment, process monitoring, downstream processing) and common biological/mechanical problems

  • Understanding the health & safety and environmental regulatory framework for biochemical processing

  • Strong understanding of principles and practices for biochemical engineering and GXP operations

The Ideal Candidate

  • Educated to HNC or Degree level in a Scientific/Engineering discipline with > 4 years of industrial experience

  • Chartered status with a relevant professional institution (i.e. chartered engineer with IChemE)

  • Previous experience of plant design & scale-up of biochemical processes

  • Previous experience modelling fermentation and biochemical processing

  • Previous experience with process optimisation and sensitivity analysis
