Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) is part of a network of elite technology and innovation centres set up by Innovate UK. The ESC works with companies that are focused on exploiting the opportunities created by the need to transform global energy systems; not only playing a part in accelerating technology-based solutions, but also engaging with Government to address the market mechanisms and business models that will be required to enable such solutions.
ESC will create a critical mass for business and research innovation, focusing on electricity, heat and combustible gases. This centre will be an important part of the UK’s innovation system, making a major long-term contribution to UK economic growth.
During lockdown, we have been working remotely and as we begin to focus more on the future, we intend to embrace a new refreshing way to utilise our office in Birmingham City Centre . As a consequence we are developing a flexible approach to the workplace , which ensures we keep some of the benefits of home working whilst enabling the Catapult to operate efficiently, this hybrid way of working may result in the majority of us working from home for a good chunk of the time, merging the best bits of both office and home working.
We are expanding our DevOps team within the Energy System Catapult to meet the demands of a growing portfolio of new and exciting projects in the energy market sector.
The DevOps team are part of a wider cross functional team and as such work on a broad spectrum of activities, ranging from support of existing projects through to development of new infrastructure for new projects.
Key Deliverables & Activities
- Support the management, maintenance and development of infrastructure on existing projects
- Design, deploy and maintain infrastructure for new projects that supports efficient development using appropriate tools and processes such as IaC and CI/CD.
- Design, deploy and maintain cloud infrastructure
- Develop and maintain infrastructure based around Kubernetes where appropriate
- Support development, implementation and maintenance of CI/CD using IaC (Infrastructure as Code) such as Terraform or Ansible
- Monitor and report on status of infrastructure and deployments
- Create and update operational and process documentation
- Identify and introduce new tools and produces to support cloud software development
What credentials are we ideally looking for?
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar.
- Demonstrable DevOps experience gained in a container-based cloud platform (AWS and Kubernetes preferred).
- Experience in the use of Terraform and Ansible.
- Strong experience in the design, implementation and operation of Continuous Delivery pipelines.
- Strong experience working with containerisation (Docker).
- Experience with automation scripting. PowerShell, Bash, Python
- Good communications skills, verbal and written.
- Self-starter, happy to work alone or as part of a team.
- Able to work in an agile development environment
- Experience of integrating automated test tools with a CI pipeline e.g., Cucumber, Postman, SoapUI.
- Experience of test-driven development and applying automated tests.
