The Energy Systems Catapult

Energy Systems Catapult was set up to accelerate the transformation of the UK’s energy system and ensure UK businesses and consumers capture the opportunities of clean growth. The Catapult is an independent, not-for-profit centre of excellence that bridges the gap between industry, government, academia and research. We take a whole-systems view of the energy sector, helping us to identify and address innovation priorities and market barriers, in order to decarbonise the energy system at the lowest cost.

During lockdown, we have been working remotely and as we begin to focus more on the future, we intend to embrace a new refreshing way to utilise our office in Birmingham City Centre . As a consequence we are developing a flexible approach to the workplace , which ensures we keep some of the benefits of home working whilst enabling the Catapult to operate efficiently, this hybrid way of working may result in the majority of us working from home for a good chunk of the time, merging the best bits of both office and home working.

Context

The Energy Systems Catapult is looking for a Consultant to support the development of our work in local energy systems, including working with networks, local authorities and industry through advisory services, consultancy and local area energy planning (LAEP); as well as B2B onsite solutions for complex public and private sector sites.

For the next stage of decarbonisation in the UK, locality matters. Whether we are decarbonising heat in homes, increasing and managing EV uptake, creating flexibility or decarbonising industrial clusters, technological solutions will need to respond to the needs of a place and its people. Importantly, local energy systems also allow communities and companies to take some ownership of the decarbonisation agenda.

The importance of local energy systems is growing. Cities such as Bristol and Glasgow have set ambitious decarbonisation targets for themselves ahead of national targets, and now need to find a way to deliver on those targets. More and more companies – from ports and heavy industry to retail and housing –  are striving to decarbonise their activities and need help to do so. Communities and companies are becoming increasingly engaged in decentralised energy solutions.

ESC is uniquely placed to create a market in LAEP and to work with public and private sector entities on pathfinder projects to decarbonise places and devise innovative local energy systems. We have unparalleled specialist energy expertise in systems integration, sophisticated modelling tools, and deep consumer insight capability, as well as market-leading experience on programmes such as Smart Systems & Heat, Modern Energy Partners, and the Energy Revolution Integration Service.

We are looking for an experienced consultant to play a key role in supporting the growth of our dynamic and successful team. You will work with the local energy systems team to win new work, lead engagement with clients and deliver ground-breaking projects.
