Title: National Business Development Manager

Reports to: UK Sales Manager – SSE Energy Solutions

Area: Nationwide with regional responsibility (North or England)

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

You will be working for SSE Energy Solutions, here you will develop and procure new business opportunities within the energy efficiency retrofit markets; working alongside Government initiatives to help facilitate the successful delivery of the Energy Company Obligation and wider group objectives.

What will I be doing?

Working with new and existing clients to create and maintain outstanding industry relationships which build upon a strong industry presence. You will be required to network across a large geographical area achieving business targets and objectives that are both financial and from a governance perspective.

You will be required to support the wider business development team through account management, bid writing and strong leadership skills. The role will support the team to ensure a national coherent approach is taken on all activity whilst regional targets are achieved. As part of this purpose you will ensure the wider drive of Plan Zero is fully embraced with company brand, ethics and members at the heart of everything you do.

Key responsibilities include:

Health and Safety

  • Actively assess risk and address all planned activities to work within SSE’s SHE guidelines. Identify all potential risks, communicate and plan solutions/safe practices to mitigate risks to yourself, customers and colleagues.

Leadership

  • Plan and prioritise personal sales activities and customer/prospect contact towards achieving agreed business aims, including costs and sales – especially managing personal time and productivity.
  • Communicate, liaise, and negotiate internally and externally using appropriate methods to facilitate the development of profitable business and sustainable relationship
  • Supporting other members of the Sales team on a national front through key account management and stakeholder engagement

Management

  • Managing relationships with clients to ensure they are engaged by all departments within the business. To act as the client’s conduit and gateway to the wider SSE/OVO divisions; this includes complaints enquiry through to complaint resolution. This may involve various departments of Energy Solutions but also SSE/OVO.
  • Take on task and “dotted-line” management whilst taking the lead on specific projects that have tight external timelines such as Local Authority procurement opportunities
  • Provide a level of governance and project approval from other areas of the business development team, promoting new opportunities to the Senior Management Team

Sales Performance

  • Develop, write and secure OJUE compliant framework contracts to the value of £50m per framework; a minimum of three frameworks Nationwide
  • Develop new business opportunities across all energy efficiency sectors
  • Build a network of clients within the energy efficiency sectors including housing authorities, supply chain, trade associates and third-party agents
  • Develop and secure regional contracts estimated between £7-10m p.a.
  • Support the wider team of business development managers resulting in indirect secured contracts valued at an aggregated value of £20-30m p.a.
  • Manage product/service mix, pricing and margins according to agreed aims
  • Respond to and follow up sales enquiries using appropriate method

Compliance and Regulation

  • Adhere to compliance and regulation requirements at all times; this should be filtered through all internal and external staff working under SSE contracts
  • Cross Sales
  • Identify opportunities within existing network to offer alternative solutions that the wider SSE/OVO divisions may benefit from
  • Actively promote and support SSE wider business objectives

Planning

  • Create and develop new sales business strategy to dovetail with overarching SSE policy and approach to sales management. To prepare a strategy document for each client outlining the key objectives and the approach to delivering targets.
  • Carry out market research, competitor analysis and client reporting
  • Monitor and report on activities and provide relevant management information.

Is this the job for me?

Ideally you will have:

  • In-depth knowledge of the industry and its current events
  • 5 years’ experience in a sales environment, preferably within Policy led industry
  • Understanding of Government Policy around clean growth, carbon emissions and fuel poverty alleviation such as: ECO, FiTs, RHI, EESSH, HEEPS,
  • Self-motivated
  • Strong communication and IT fluency
  • Creative talents and the ability to solve tough problems
  • The ability to handle pressure and meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent time management and organisation
  • Maintain and develop existing relationships
  • Liaise and attend meetings with other company functions necessary to perform duties and aid business and organisational development.
  • Attend training, industry exhibitions and client workshops to develop relevant knowledge and skills.

Key Financial Measures

  • Develop and secure regional contracts estimated between £7-10m p.a.
  • Support and develop Business Development team resulting in indirect secured contracts valued at £20-30m p.a.
  • Secure OJUE compliant framework contracts to the value of £50m per framework; a minimum of three frameworks Nationwide

Key Projects / Activities Managed

  • Identify initiatives and oversee projects to achieve improvements, overall objectives of the Energy Efficiency team and compliance with the Energy Company Obligation

Decision Making Authority

  • Create and develop a strategic approach in support of securing contracts across the UK
  • Selection of key external clients and stakeholders to engage and develop a relationship with; with a view to securing contracts
  • First stage project evaluation and subsequent recommendation to the senior management team
  • Project Sign-off within public procurement and tender submission
