The OVO Group’s purpose is to drive progress towards net zero carbon living. To reach Plan Zero, we need everyone to come together – not just as customers buying energy, but as members with a common goal. As part of this ambitious plan, our goal is to become the ‘Leading Employer in the UK’ by 2030. If you think you could be the talent we’re looking for, then come and join the adventure!

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?
You will be leading the Developer Experience team whose purpose is to ensure Kaluza’s development teams have great tools to build its nascent Energy Platform. You will build and lead a growing team of engineers. This team has a varied role where you’ll be exposed to the full stack and will work across technologies including GCP, AWS, Kubernetes and Kafka.
You’ll be working alongside almost 250 Engineers across the Kaluza technology team, all with varying backgrounds and levels of experience. One key thing that all of our engineers have in common is a desire to develop forward-thinking, industry disrupting products as well as their own skills.
You’ll commonly encounter Scala, Clojure, Node, Python, TypeScript, Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, React, Cypress, Swift and React Native. We run our services in GCP and AWS.
What will I be doing?
Kaluza’s platforms are going through an exciting period of growth at the moment, and with that comes some really exciting company-wide challenges. You’ll be an integral part of the leadership team, taking ownership of strategic decision making and driving cross-team initiatives: from how to improve productivity, to determining our long-term data strategy.
Engineers that the Developer Experience team support live within cross-functional product teams, who are responsible for the entirety of their product, including feature conception, coding, testing, deployment, cloud infrastructure, monitoring, alerting, setting SLOs, and support. We care passionately about technical excellence, and you’ll find a strong culture of automated testing, frequent deployments to production, and using agile practices.
Building strong teams is a vitally important aspect of the role, so you’ll be heavily involved in recruitment, onboarding and personal development of engineers. We have a very strong engineering culture that’s all about empowerment and ownership: all to tackle one of the world’s greatest problems.
Key responsibilities include:
Engineering Managers contribute to both the technical and product vision of their teams, making sure that their products are successful. You’re unlikely to be particularly hands-on with the code, but will have enough technical experience to be able to chip in and guide technical discussions, bringing the big picture context. You will look after a team of engineers up to 10 direct reports, but this team is expected to grow and you will be expected to grow with it.
Is this the job for me?
Ideally you are:
- You’re passionate about nurturing engineering talent, encouraging their development, and also ensuring everyone is aligned with delivery objectives
- You are genuinely excited about building a Platform Team that will positively impact over a million people and also our environment
- You have experience working with high performing engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their technical decision making
- You use your influence and stakeholder management skills to have wide-reaching impact
- You seek learning opportunities to deepen your expertise or broaden your knowledge
- You love building scalable, resilient products
- Passionate about technical excellence, you’ll find a strong culture of automated testing, frequent deployments to production, and using agile practices.
