Overview of the role

The successful candidate would join Tokamak Energy’s rapidly growing world class HTS magnet team, which is part of the Technology Development function. They will be responsible for design and modelling of the cryogenic systems required for fusion systems and R&D. This will include both on cryogen-free systems for cooling a diverse scale range of HTS magnets to < 20, including the use of helium gas cryo-circulation for the large magnet systems needed for plasma confinement, and flowing liquid cryogen cooling for copper magnets (eg: support of ST40 LN2 cooling). The role includes the specification and/or design of cryostat components and the ancillary infrastructure, such as current leads, thermal shielding and cryo-coolers.

Main duties/role and responsibilities

  • Production of fully specified requirements proposals to be used as line-up documents for detail design and procurement of cryogenic systems.
  • Thermal and electromagnetic design of cryogenic components and systems.
  • Leading cryogenic system design projects requiring technical project management.
  • Supporting purchasing in negotiation with cryogenic infrastructure suppliers.
  • Supervising the installation and commissioning of cryogenic systems.
  • Test and de-bugging of cryogenic systems

 Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities:

  • Working at height (ladders, scissor lifts, cherry pickers & scaffolding)
  • Occasional night working (11pm-6am) if required to support business targets
  • Work in hot or cold environments
  • Driving on Company business
  • Use of welding equipment
  • Working with electricity (LV only)
  • Work with cryogenic fluids including liquid nitrogen
  • Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields
  • Working with materials that are managed under the control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH)
  • Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business


Experience required

  • Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing cryogenic systems
  • PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of electrical and fluid control engineering and/or instrumentation.
  • Computational fluid dynamics, 3D visualization and CAD skills.
  • Understanding and awareness of intellectual property.
  • Experience using test and diagnostic equipment.
