The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is a growing, global nonprofit media organization that is reinventing investigative journalism for the public good. By developing and equipping a global network of investigative journalists and publishing their stories, we expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. We see a future where organized crime and corruption are drastically reduced and democracy is strengthened. Our global team includes editors, researchers, data engineers, security specialists, administrators, technologists, and strategists, each with areas of in-depth expertise.
OCCRP is looking for a Senior Systems Administrator to help lead the planning, development and roll out of new IT infrastructure. We support a range of services internally for staff and journalists, as well as for some of our member centers and publishing partners.
There are around a dozen self-hosted open source solutions that make up our service offering. This includes tooling such as backups and monitoring. We have a clear idea of the direction we want to head in, and are looking for someone with experience of this kind of roll-out to undertake the heavy lifting. You will be part of a four-person remote team.
Your role will be focused exclusively on designing, developing, testing and rolling out the new infrastructure. OCCRP faces some serious and unique security challenges, with a fast-paced working environment. Both of those aspects will need to be incorporated in future work.
This is a six-month contract within European time zones.
Team: Infrastructure Team, working closely with Head of Infrastructure

Knowledge sharing within the team
Maintaining the new infrastructure for a temporary period
Strong working knowledge of an Infrastructure-as-code configuration management tool – ideally Ansible – but other tools will be considered.
Good working knowledge of Linux based operating systems, such as Debian
Knowledge of Docker container orchestration
Knowledge of CI/CD
Ability to write good technical documentation
Good interpersonal skills with open communication
Good written and spoken English
Knowledge of PHP and Nginx
Experience with Google Cloud Platform
Experience running and maintaining self-hosted application environments

Managing systems with a ‘security first’ approach
Ability to manage and prioritize own workload
Working within a team environment
Previous infrastructure design experience
